In Ireland, while we are part of the time zone centred on the Greenwich meridian, our standard time is actually what we use in summer (IST - Irish Standard Time). So for the winter we put our clocks back an hour, to give us better daylight in the mornings.<br /><br />Functionally, it is equivalent to what the UK does and means we use the same time as they do, but in legal terms it is for diametrically opposite reasons. Having thought some more, I suspect it was the 18th century aristocracy wanting to show off their wealth by burning candles late into the night. Being idle rich they had scant need to pay attention to economic factors like daylight saving.
